Role Description

The Data Analyst will lead and perform complex analysis in an evolving data environment. In addition to strong technical skills, this position must have superior business process analysis and interpersonal skills. This role will process, summarize and bring order to raw data, transforming them into key actionable information on which Managers and Leaders can make decisions and set policies on.  This role will collaborate with the Data Architect and Business Analysts as well as key business stakeholders.

  • Ability to effectively communicate data analysis results and data models in clear, easy to understand terms, when dealing with anyone outside the Architecture team.

  • Ability to conduct stakeholder analysis to understand exactly when and who to communicate what data to (PM, BA, IT Leadership, Business SME’s)

  • Verify the integrity of reports, identifying exceptions, statistical trends and anomalies
  • Develop a strong understanding of the source systems that pass data to the reporting systems, the relationships within the data and how the data is used
  • Perform data profiling to analyze the candidate data sources to clarify at an early stage that the right data is available at the right detail level and that anomalies can be handled subsequently
  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate production of routine datasets, reports and other analytic deliverables using a variety of data retrieval and analysis tools
  • Use elements of data modeling to define and analyze data requirements needed to support business processes including conceptual data modeling, logical data modeling and physical data modeling
  • Understand how the different models (conceptual, logical and physical) relate to the Enterprise level data model if and when available
  • Work with Data Architect to contribute to the development of an Enterprise level data model
  • Constantly evolve data models with the guiding principle that they are living documents that align to the rapidly changing business growth and needs
  • Escalate significant issues and recommend action steps to IT Leadership team as needed
  • Develop dashboards to track remediation of issues
  • Understand data warehousing concepts and differences between Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence deliverables and roles.
  • Support data clean up and report development and maintenance efforts
  • Accurate documenting, designing, producing, explaining and distributing the reports
  • Develop ad-hoc reports and data extractions
  • Work alongside the Information and Data Management Team to help design processes and analytical solutions that can be implemented with minimal disruption to supporting systems
  • Prepare and execute testing plans to ensure high quality results as required
  • Assist with addressing support requests to ensure timely and thorough resolution of issues
  • Participate on key projects with as the Data Expert as required.
  • Supports Projects in their data integration and migration plans as required
  • Serve as a resource to super-users and colleagues
  • Excellent analytical skills; ability to identify information needs, design and execute quantitative approaches to meet them and provide clear, valuable information deliverables
  • Quantitative reasoning skills in decision-making
  • Interactive skills with statistical analysis

Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree in information systems, computer science or related field of study and/or 5 – 10 years’ experience in a Data Analysis/Modeling role
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in reporting or data analytics   
  • Previous experience with Data Source View Wizard and Data Source View Designer in SQL
  • Previous experience with elements of Data Modeling
  • Hands on experience in multiple industries with a strong focus on the Oil and Gas industry (SAGD specific knowledge a bonus)
  • Previous experience with the formulation of technical solution strategies and ideas
  • Extensively developed written and oral communication skills with specific focus on peer-to-peer and peer-to-senior management communication
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, combined with strong business judgment and an ability to present analysis in a clear and compelling manner
  • Understanding of basic statistical concepts
  • Strong organisation, planning and time management skills
  • Self-direction and innovation
