Purpose of Role:

To contribute to MEG Energy Corp’s success by enabling and supporting operational capabilities associated with; communication, risk management, business continuity, business intelligence and security. 

 

Summary of Position:

As part of the Technical Operations team, the Senior System Administrator works collaboratively to deliver infrastructure and database related services across the organization. With a focus on both Microsoft Server and SQL platforms, this role will be responsible for implementation, maintenance and administration of MEG’s core technological infrastructure. Candidates must demonstrate strong technical skills and knowledge in a variety of disciplines including; Security, Active Directory, Exchange, Virtualization and SQL Databases. The Senior System Administrator will be responsible for the relational databases and associated processes, they will work with senior infrastructure resources, but will maintain responsibility for database integrity and their synchronization across environments. This resource must be proactive in improving the database, technical processes and user relationships, while maintaining performance and adherence to standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:      

  • Provide support and design activities within the database and server environments
  • Participate in design and maintenance of enterprise architecture, including software deployment, server patching, system configuration, and technology lifecycle planning
  • Analyze existing operations and make recommendations for the improvement and growth of the operating environment.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day support, design, creation, and maintenance of databases in a client/server environment.
  • Ensure availability management activities support business continuity objective
  • Review and analyze existing infrastructure effectiveness and efficiency and develop strategies for improving or leveraging both server and database systems.
  • Collaborate with other IT and business resources to ensure services entering the production operating environment are transitioned smoothly with proper operational support documentation and training.
  • Develop database architectures to address business requirements, ensuring system scalability, security, performance and reliability.
  • Design database applications such as interfaces, data transfer mechanisms and data partitions to enable efficient access of the generic database structure.
  • Work with management to develop database strategies to support organization needs.
  • Perform tier 3 infrastructure support activities including the assessment and execution of infrastructure upgrades and patches
  • Create plans for architecture updates and integrates new systems with existing warehouse structure to refine performance/functionality
  • Collaborate with architecture on the delivery of technology and availability of infrastructure
  • Cultivate and disseminate knowledge of infrastructure-usage best practices.
  • Collaborate with relevant operational and build teams to construct testing and implementation strategies.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Computer Science or Information Technology
  • Minimum 10 years of experience designing, developing and maintaining SQL databases
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience deploying, integrating, securing and optimizing a windows based server environment 
  • Microsoft certification; database, server or security

 

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong database administration experience (SQL Server 2008 and newer)
  • Strong working knowledge of Windows Server 2008 through 2012 R2, including core Microsoft software (IIS, File Services, Print Services, .NET Framework, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of virtualization environments specifically VMware
  • Working knowledge on Exchange 2010+ and/or Microsoft O365
  • Experience with Active Directory management and administration
  • Experience with database development using SQL server management studio.
  • In-depth knowledge and expertise of database technologies, along with solid programming, design and system analysis skills
  • Experience writing and troubleshooting SQL Code and design (stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints)
  • Experience debugging, troubleshooting and fixing Microsoft OS or peripheral issues 
  • PowerShell scripting experience
  • SQL experience with data modeling and version control
  • Experience with SQL server database projects and how they are applied across environments
  • Experience with SQL server integration services for ETL
  • Experience in performance tuning, and query optimization using related monitoring and troubleshooting tools
  • Experience creating and maintaining proper indexes
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, log shipping issues, connectivity issues, security issues
  • Understands data architecture and enterprise data requirements
  • Experience with and knowledge of Enterprise BI and strategic planning
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
